Premium v1 - v2

Prev Next

Azure Premium SSD v2 disk storage represents the next generation of block storage technology for Azure Virtual Machines, offering enhanced performance, scalability, and cost efficiency. This guide outlines our new automated conversion feature that enables seamless migration (zero-downtime) from Premium SSD v1 to v2 disks during the onboarding process.

Premium SSD v2 Key Things to Know

  1. Premium SSD v2 disks offer the following baseline performance:

    • Base IOPS: 3000

    • Base Throughput: 125 MB/s

  2. There are also a few limitations to be aware of:

    • Cannot be used as OS disks

    • Host caching is not supported. During conversion, any existing host cache settings will be automatically modified:

      • If Premium v1 disk has ReadOnly caching → Will be set to None

      • If Premium v1 disk has ReadWrite caching → Will be set to None

      • This change is automatic and follows Azure's requirements for Premium SSD v2 disks

    • Available in select regions only

For a comprehensive list of limitations and requirements, please consult the Azure documentation.

Understanding Disk Conversion Behavior

  1. Instance-Level Conversion

    • Conversion decisions are made at the instance level

    • Currently supports only Premium SSD v1 to v2 conversions

  2. Volume Pool Consistency

    • All volumes belonging to the instance must maintain the same disk type

    • Example scenario:

      • Instance has volumes D, E, and F (all Premium v1)

      • If volume D is converted to v2 during initial onboarding

      • In subsequent onboarding of volumes E and F, conversion to v2 becomes mandatory

UI Indicators

  • Compatibility Status

    • Green Icon: Indicates the instance has passed compatibility checks and is eligible for v2 conversion

    • Greyed Out Icon: Indicates the instance has Premium v1 disks but cannot be converted to v2 due to Azure limitations

  • Conversion Options

    • A checkbox is provided in the onboarding modal to opt-in/out of v2 conversion

    • Selecting the conversion option will update the displayed cost savings

    • Cost savings calculations reflect the difference between v1 and v2 configurations
